TFSA room holds at $7,000 for 2026. RRSP limit climbs to $33,810.
The TFSA annual contribution limit stays at $7,000 for 2026, the third consecutive year at that level. If you have been eligible since the program began in 2009 and never contributed, your cumulative room is now $109,000. New room became available on January 1, 2026.
The RRSP dollar limit for 2026 rises to $33,810, up from $32,490 in 2025. Your personal limit is the lesser of that figure and 18 percent of your 2025 earned income, plus any unused room carried forward. A workplace pension adjustment reduces it further.
Which account first? As a rule of thumb, the TFSA wins when your income is modest or you expect a higher tax bracket later. The RRSP wins when you are in a high bracket today and expect a lower one in retirement, because the deduction is worth more now.
One caution: TFSA overcontributions attract a 1 percent per month penalty tax, and withdrawals only restore room on January 1 of the following year. Check your room on CRA My Account before making a large deposit, or ask us to confirm it as part of your annual review.
